Unwanted veins usually come in two forms, varicose veins and spider veins. They are unwanted because they have an unwanted effect on the appearance. In addition, varicose veins can make life uncomfortable thanks to the symptoms that are often associated with the condition. Fortunately, we have various options for vein treatment at our office.
Spider veins can develop in different parts of the body, but they are most common on the legs, face and chest. Varicose veins almost always develop in the legs. These unwanted veins can appear when the vessels become enlarged because they are no longer functioning as they should. When this happens, they become visible through the skin and cause an appearance that no one wants to have. This impact on the appearance can, in turn, impact a person’s self-esteem. It can even get to the point that some people are hesitant about going out in public for fear of what other people will think. Others may change the way they dress or become reluctant to engage in certain activities.
In addition to the appearance issues that are related to the presence of unwanted veins, varicose veins can cause aching, burning, swelling and itching. People that spend a lot of their time either on their feet or seated in one position are more likely to suffer from these uncomfortable symptoms.
There are several methods available at our office for vein treatment. The oldest method that is still in use today is sclerotherapy. These treatments are done by injecting a special solution into the unwanted vein in order to make it collapse and close off. The solution irritates the vessel walls, making them stick together. It also causes the blood inside the targeted vein to thicken. The vein is safely destroyed, turning into scar tissue that the body begins to absorb. Over the following weeks and months, this tissue will be gone and the appearance will return to normal.
Laser vein treatment has become popular in recent years. This is done when concentrated pulses of high-intensity light are directed inside the veins that are to be removed. When the vessels absorb the laser energy, it is converted to heat, which then safely destroys the vessel.
These procedures are minimally-invasive and can be done in the comfort of our office. There is no need for a hospital stay or general anesthesia. Another popular treatment that we may use is microphlebectomy.
